Band 7+: In many countries, people are living in a "throw-away" society. They tend to use things for a short time and then throw them away. What do you think are the causes? What problems may it lead to?

Modern socities has produced more garbage in the last decades than in previous years, and it has become a crucial environmental issue worldwide. Citizens use what they buy for a short time and discard almost everything. The causes of this problem rely on low-quality products designed to last for a short time, and people’s consumerist habits to get the latest version of an item. To tackle these problems, nations should regulate industries to make them improve the quality of their products, and inform people through campaigns about the impact of consummerism, changing their harmful habits.

Today’s industries create products that do not last much because they sell cost-effective items by investing less money, resulting in low-quality products that force citizens to discard them shortly. For instance, the trend in the clothing industry globally is to manufacture products with low quality that cannot be used for long periods. Therefore, citizens are forced to discard their clothes and buy new items regularly. Specifically, the so-called fast fashion has created immense garbage landfills in many major cities around the world. To counteract this, countries should regulate product quality to make industries invest more to create items.

Furthermore, citizens’ consummerist habits contribute to discard items and replace them with the latest version. Many of these products can still be used, unlike the example of fast fashion, but people decide to thrown them away. For instance, the industry of mobile phones creates a new version to attract the interest of consumers every month. Statistically, it has been reported that people usually discard excellent phones after six months, producing a tremendous amounts of technological trash. To address this issue, people should be made aware of the harmful environmental impact of their consummerist behaviors through state campaigns. Consequently, this will help citizens change their actions to take care of the planet.

In conclusion, society produces significant amounts of trash because people buy low-quality items that do not last much, and because they have consummerist habits. To tackle these problems, countries should regulate the quality of items in the market and help people change their consummerist habits through campaigns. Unfortunately, trash is accumulating globally, urging nations to regulate the amount of garbage produced to create a better environment for all.
