Band 9: Some people think that robots are important for human's future development. Others think that robots have negative effects on society. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Opinions are divided on whether robots will yield more drawbacks or play a decisive role in the development of future societies. Personally, I believe that robots will make a largely positive contribution in terms of improving efficiency and ensuring human safety if they are managed properly.

There are several compelling reasons why a segment of society holds a cynical view regarding the integration of robots into daily life. The first concern is that it can lead to job displacement, especially with routine and repetitive occupations. As automatic machines have no requirements for salaries, holidays or employment benefits, the demand for human labour may inevitably become unnecessary for businesses. This can deprive low-skilled workers of their jobs and stable sources of income. As a result, unemployment rate and social inequality may increase accordingly. Another notable drawback is that automation can create excessive dependence on technology. Due to the increasing number of tasks that robots can perform, individuals would have no opportunities to do tasks independently and gradually lose practical skills. Consequently, they will struggle when machines malfunction or systems fail, causing society to become vulnerable.

Notwithstanding the aforementioned drawbacks, I would contend that the adoption of robots can bring unprecedented efficiency and ability to handle hazardous tasks. Automatic machines can perform tasks continuously without becoming tired at a greater speed and accuracy, thereby helping companies increase output, minimize production errors and lower operating costs. Products are therefore more affordable, which in turn promotes overall economic growth. Furthermore, robots are capable of working in dangerous environments, where humans are threatened. They can replace people in jobs that have harsh working conditions such as mining and space exploration, hence reducing workplace accidents and protecting human lives. Nevertheless, I am convinced that risks associated with robots are serious yet manageable. Governments can host retraining programmes and mandate that robots complement rather than replace human labour to maximise the merits.

In conclusion, while I acknowledge that robots may pose certain unemployment and technological dependence, I maintain that they can enhance productivity and workplace safety if they are thoroughly regulated.
