The line chart illustrates the proportion of people using two kinds of telephone, namely fixed mobile in Africa, from 1994 to 2004, at a 1-year interval. Overall, the percentage of both fixed and mobile increased, with the leading position swapping over the period.
Regarding the first seven years, starting at 1.7% in 1994, the percentage of fixed African subscribers overtook about 0.5 % of mobile users. The figure for Africans using fixed phones rose slightly to just under 3% in 2001. Meanwhile, the proportion of mobile African subscribers approximately doubled at about 1% in 1999 which then continued its rise at around 3% which shared similar with fixed phones.
Regarding the last three years, the percentage of fixed phone African users climbed gradually to remain stable roughly 3% over the last period. The proportion of Africans using mobile phones roughly tripled to its peak of just under 9% in 2004.
