Positive And Negative

Band 7+: Many people no longer read newspapers or watch TV news programmes. Instead they get news about the world from the Internet. Is this a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In our modern society, while traditional media such as the press and TV are declining in terms of audience, the internet is gaining in popularity, as many people find this more convenient. While this shift may be beneficial, it also brings some drawbacks, which I will highlight in this essay.

Firstly, taking international news from the internet has some notable advantages, among which are comfort and convenience. As recent advancements in technology have spurred the number of devices capable of connecting to the internet, it has become more convenient and accessible for everybody to get information from the web, from any part of the world, at any time. These devices include smartphones, personal computers, and tablets, which can be carried out with some autonomy.

Secondly, the internet has made information more liberal and open to access. Given that anyone with a smartphone or laptop can upload information on the web, more topics on the news and more areas worldwide are being covered. This helps circumvent traditional media’s limitations, which are limited in terms of coverage. Additionally, with the internet, there is more freedom and less censorship as people are more free to consult the news of their preference or to share their thoughts online.

However, the internet also brings us some negative aspects, including the increased rate of misinformation and disinformation. As anybody can reach the internet and upload his mind, some people use this opportunity for malpractice. For instance, fake news is rapidly spread and uncontrollable over the internet with more profound consequences as much as political influences and mass control. Some of this misinformation has led to suicides and war in many parts of the world.

In conclusion, listening to the news over the internet instead of traditional media carries advantages such as convenience and freedom of the press. Nevertheless, they still bring some drawbacks, requiring regulations and rules.
