Band 6+: Personal Reflection: Understanding the Ideal Self and the Ought Self

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The ideal self is who I want to be. It is the best version of myself, where I feel confident, successful, and balanced. My ideal self includes doing what I love, helping others, and living a meaningful life. It is the person I dream of becoming.

The ought self is who I feel I should be to meet the expectations of others. For example, I feel pressure to focus on stability and responsibility because this is what society or my family expects from me. This self is about doing what others think is right, even if it doesn’t fully match my dreams.

Sometimes, my ideal self and ought self overlap, but often they are very different. For example, I want to spend more time on creative activities, but I feel I must focus on traditional success. This difference creates stress and can make it hard for me to express my true thoughts or feelings. I worry about disappointing others, and this impacts my communication with them.

Reflecting on this has helped me understand that I need to listen to myself more. Being honest with myself and with others is important. I am learning to focus on my ideal self while still meeting my responsibilities to others. Finding this balance will help me improve my communication and feel more at peace.

In order to reduce crime, we need to attack the causes of crime such as poverty and lack of educational opportunities. It is not enough to simply have more police on the street and put more people into prison. To what extent do you agree/disagree?

It is widely believed that in order to diminish crime rates, people should prioritise the causes of crime, rather than sending more individuals to jail and increasing the number of police officers on the streets. From my perspective, reducing crime rates can be done by understanding the root cause of criminal behavior. One of the […]

Young people now spend less time doing outdoor activities. Why is this happening, and what can be done to encourage them to spend more time outside?
