In recent times, an increasing number of elderly individuals seeking employment find themselves in competition with younger candidates for the same job positions. This may result age discrimination. Namely, older workers may be perceived as less capable or adaptable than their younger counterparts. In my opinion, providing opportunities for older workers to develop new skills or enhance existing ones can improve their competitiveness in the job market.
The first disadvantage of being competitive with younger generations is that former employees may face ageism where older job seekers may encounter bias and prejudice based on their age. For example, a qualified older job seeker may be passed over for a position in favor of a younger candidate based on stereotypes that older individuals are less adaptable to change or technology. Moreover, unemployment can lead to financial insecurity and mental health issues. Difficulty in finding vacancy can cause economic hardship for previous employees who may be dependent on income to support themselves and their families. This financial trouble results in stress and anxiety which bring serious mental health problems.
As regards solutions, government play a main role to track this problem. Initially, older people should be encouraged to retire at a certain age by offering various retirement benefits, enough allowance and health care services. This will create mor job opportunities for young citizens and mitigate the competition. On the other hand, if the government provide opportunities for them to acquire new skills or strengthen their current ones, they can significantly enhance their marketability and competitiveness in the workforce. This proactive approach not only equips older workers with the tools they need to thrive in their careers but also fosters a culture of continuous learning and growth within the organization.
In conclusion, older job seekers facing competition with younger candidates which trigger age discrimination, financial instability, and mental health issues. By giving government support in encouraging retirement and offering skill development opportunities can help alleviate these challenges and create a more inclusive job market.
