Overall, it is clear that the number of renters in the UK significantly increased while the percentage of homeowners declined over the period.
In 2004, the proportion of renters was low with only 20% compared to the percentage of homeowners which reached its peak at almost 60%. However, after two years period of time, the percentage of young people renting a house started to rise by approximately 5% (from 20% to 25%) in 2007, consistently increased at around 35% in 2010, and remained steady between the year 2011 and 2012 with just over 40% . Furthermore, the increased number of people who rented a house soared at 48% in 2014.
In contrast, the percentage of young people who owned houses gradually decreased in the first two years by approximately 5% (from 60% to 55%), with a slight fluctuation between 2006 and 2008, and finally dropped to around 48% in 2010. Additionally, it remained unchanged between 2011 and 2012 with only 43% then moderately decreased to nearly 35% in 2014.
