Band 6+: More and more people nowadays want to have things done instantly. Why is that? Is it a good or a bad thing?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Today we live in a fast-paced world where everything happens at a high speed. An increasing number of people expect things like goods and services to be provided immediately, while the advance of technology offers endless possibilities. However, I would argue that this a negative development because it may lead to mental health problems.

On the one hand, more and more people have busy family lives and stressful jobs and do not have time to waste. With the advance of technology, it has become possible to have things done instantly. In terms of access to services, goods or information it has made a lot of aspects of people’s life more comfortable. If you have a smartphone, you can do your shopping, transfer money from your bank account, order food from a restaurant, communicate with your family or colleagues, find information, book holidays and do so many other things in no time. But does it make people happy?

On the downside, these expectations make people dependent on technology and can affect their mental health. A lot of people are not only unprepared to wait, but they also tend to develop anxiety when they have to. While people get used to having things done quickly it may not always be the case. Even minor delays may sometimes lead to increased stress levels because people cannot manage their expectations. Nowadays a low smartphone battery level or an increased taxi waiting time can leave people frustrated.

To conclude, today the world is moving at a fast pace and people do not want to waste time and lose opportunities. While technology has made it possible to have things done quickly, this is having a toll on people’s mental state. If people could learn to slow down, it would be beneficial for their wellbeing.
