| Q11 | branch | Well, most of you probably know Sports World – the branch of a Danish sports goods company that opened a few years ago – it’s attracted a lot of custom, and so the company has now decided to open another branch in the area | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript talks about Sports World, which is a 'branch' (a shop) belonging to a 'Danish sports goods company' (an international business). It then explains that the company is opening 'another branch' (a second shop) nearby. Answer Explanation: The answer 'branch' means a local store or office that is part of a larger business or company. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is 'branch' because the speaker mentions that Sports World is already a 'branch' of a Danish company and that they have decided to open 'another branch' in the local area. This matches the description of a new store location belonging to an international organization. |
| Q12 | west | It’s going to be in the shopping centre to the west of Bradcaster, so that will be good news for all of you who’ve found the original shop in the north of the town hard to get to | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript explains that the new store will open in the shopping center on the west side of Bradcaster. This is to help customers who lived far away from the first shop in the north of town. Answer Explanation: The answer "west" is a direction. It tells us the location of the new shop in relation to the town of Bradcaster. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is "west" because the speaker says the company is opening a second branch in a new place. She clearly states that this new location is a shopping center to the west of Bradcaster, which will be easier to visit for some people than the original shop in the north. |
| Q13 | clothing | The first three floors have a huge range of sports clothing as well as equipment, and on the top floor there’s a café and a book and DVD section | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript states that the first three levels of the shop are filled with many different kinds of sports clothes and tools used for sports. Answer Explanation: The answer is the type of garments people wear when they are being active or playing sports. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is "clothing" because the speaker says that the first three floors of the shop sell a wide variety of clothes for sports. The notes ask for what is found on floors 1–3 besides equipment, and the speaker mentions "sports clothing as well as equipment" in that specific area of the store. |
| Q14 | 10 | If they haven’t got exactly what you want in stock they promise to get it for you in ten days | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript says that if the store does not have the specific product you are looking for, they will order it and have it ready for you in 10 days. Answer Explanation: The answer is 10. This is the number of days the shop takes to order an item for you if they don't have it in the store right now. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is 10 because the speaker says the shop promises to get items 'in ten days' if they are not currently in the shop. This is a special promise for the new shop, as the old shop takes 14 days. Keywords to notice are 'in stock' (meaning 'in the shop') and 'ten days'. |
| Q15 | running | They cover all the major sports, including football, tennis and swimming, but they particularly focus on running, and they claim to have the widest range of equipment in the country | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript explains that the shop has items for many big sports, but the most important sport for them is running. Answer Explanation: The answer is the specific sport that the new shop aims to sell the most equipment for. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is running because the speaker mentions that although the shop sells items for several sports, they particularly focus on this one. In this context, the word focus serves as a synonym for specialises, indicating their main area of expertise or interest. |
| Q16 | bags | As well as that, a whole section of the third floor is devoted to sports bags, including the latest designs from the States – if you can’t find what you want here, it doesn’t exist | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript explains that a large part of the third floor is used only for sports bags, and they have many different styles. Answer Explanation: The answer is bags, which refers to sports bags used for carrying sports clothes and tools. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is bags because the speaker mentions that a specific part of the shop's third floor is dedicated entirely to this item. The phrase 'devoted to' means that a specific section is used only for selling sports bags. |
| Q17 | A | The shop will be open from 9.00 am this Saturday and if you go along to the opening then you’ll have the chance to meet the national 400 metres running champion Paul King, who’s coming along to open the shop, and he will be staying around until about midday to chat to any fans who want to meet him and sign autographs | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript explains that the store opens at 9:00 am on Saturday. The champion athlete, Paul King, will be there to open the store and will stay to talk to people until about noon (midday). Answer Explanation: The answer means that the sports star will be at the store only during the first half of Saturday. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is A because the text says the runner, Paul King, will come to the shop's opening at 9:00 am on Saturday. He plans to stay until "midday," which is 12:00 pm (noon). Because he leaves at noon, he is only there in the morning, not the whole day or the whole weekend. |
| Q18 | A | while the first person to get all the questions correct gets a year’s free membership of the Bradcaster Gym | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript states that the very first person to give a right answer for every question will receive a free membership to the local gym for a year. Answer Explanation: The answer means a free pass to use a sports center or exercise room for one year. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is A because the transcript mentions different prizes for different amounts of correct answers. People who get 15 out of 20 questions right win a video (DVD), and everyone who participates gets a calendar. However, the specific prize for the first person who gets every single question (all 20) right is a gym membership. |

| Q20 | A / E | This would normally cost £30.00 but is available at half price for this month only. There are only a limited number of places available for this, so to make a booking phone 560341 | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript states that the cost of the test is cut in half for the current month. It also explains that because there are not many spots available, you have to call to save (book) your spot. Answer Explanation: The answer highlights two facts about the fitness test: you must book it in advance, and it is currently being sold at a lower price. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is based on the details provided about the shop's new fitness test. The speaker explicitly mentions that the test is 'available at half price for this month only,' which means it is cheaper than usual. Furthermore, the speaker states that there are 'only a limited number of places' and provides a phone number for listeners to 'make a booking,' which is a synonym for reserving a place. |

ANDREW: Now we go to Jane who is going to tell us about what’s happening in town this weekend.
JANE: Right, thanks Andrew, and now on to what’s new, and do we really need yet another sports shop in Bradcaster? Well, most of you probably know Sports World – the branch of a Danish sports goods company that opened a few years ago – it’s attracted a lot of custom, and so the company has now decided to open another branch in the area. It’s going to be in the shopping centre to the west of Bradcaster, so that will be good news for all of you who’ve found the original shop in the north of the town hard to get to.
I was invited to a special preview and I can promise you, this is the ultimate in sports retailing. The whole place has been given a new minimalist look with the company’s signature colours of black and red. The first three floors have a huge range of sports clothing as well as equipment, and on the top floor there’s a café and a book and DVD section. You’ll find all the well-known names as well as some less well-known ones. If they haven’t got exactly what you want in stock they promise to get it for you in ten days. Unlike the other store, where it can take up to fourteen days. They cover all the major sports, including football, tennis and swimming, but they particularly focus on running, and they claim to have the widest range of equipment in the country. As well as that, a whole section of the third floor is devoted to sports bags, including the latest designs from the States – if you can’t find what you want here, it doesn’t exist!
The shop will be open from 9.00 am this Saturday and if you go along to the opening then you’ll have the chance to meet the national 400 metres running champion Paul King, who’s coming along to open the shop, and he will be staying around until about midday to chat to any fans who want to meet him and sign autographs.
Then there will be a whole range of special attractions all weekend. There will be free tickets for local sporting events for the first 50 customers, and also a special competition open to all. Just answer fifteen out of twenty sports questions correctly to win a signed copy of Paul King’s DVD ‘Spring Tips’, while the first person to get all the questions correct gets a year’s free membership of the Bradcaster Gym. All entrants will receive a special Sports calendar with details of all Bradcaster fixtures in the coming year.
One of the special opening offers is a fitness test – a complete review of your cardiac fitness and muscle tone, actually done in the shop by qualified staff. This would normally cost £30.00 but is available at half price for this month only. There are only a limited number of places available for this, so to make a booking phone 560341. In addition, if you open an account you get lots more special offers including the chance to try out equipment at special open evenings ...
