Social media has a fundamental relationship with the way people form and maintain relationships. And while it offers undeniable benefits, I believe its overall impact on interpersonal relationships is predominantly negative. On a positive side of social media, platforms enable people to stay connected across geographic boundaries which remarkably ease. Friends and family members who live in different countries can communicate instantly, share life updates and maintaining a sense of closeness that would have been impossible in the past. In addition, these platforms allow individuals to find like-minded communities which can be especially valuable for those who feel isolated in their immediate environment. For example, teenagers whose niche interests or marginalized identities can build supportive networks online fostering a sense of belonging. I don’t know. What is the point of that?
