From my point of view, following the rules is more crucial than just winning because rules make the game fair for everyone. Rules are also there to protect players from injuries, so it's not only about fitness but also about safety. For example, in football, if a player cheats, it can lead to arguments or even injuries. Winning is nice, but if it's done by breaking rules, it doesn't feel like a real achievement.
