My first interaction with the patient as a pharmacist was um, a meaningful experience that taught me the importance of communication, empathy and clinical knowledge. It occurred during my tring period in a community pharmacy as 55 year old woman approached the counter with the prescription for anti hypertensive medication. I greeted her with a smile and introduced myself. Good afternoon, I am Anjit, your pharmacist today. How may I assist you? After verifying her prescription, I asked uh, a basic question about her medical history. Any known drug allergies and what whether she has currently taking any other medicine. She informed me that she had been recently diagnosed with a high blood pressure and was unsure how to manage it. I saw this as an um, opportunity to provide patient counseling and support. I carefully explained the name and the purpose of the medication, the correct doses and the importance of taking it at the same time every day. I also emphasized the need to monitor her blood pressure regularly and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I explained potential side effects such as dizziness or fatigue and advise her to contact a doctor if they became severe. Throughout the conversation, I ensured she was comfortable and encouraged her to ask questions. Before she left, I asked her to repeat the uh, instruction to confirm her understanding. She did so accurately and thank me for explaining everything clearly. The simple thank you made me realize how important the pharmacist patient relationship is. It strengthened my confidence and reminded me that being a pharmacist is not just about dispensing medicine, but also about the medication GUID.
