Despite the prevalence of discussion about anorexia, it is not a new disorder. The first description of a patient with anorexia is attributed to an English physician who reported it in 1689. The disease was further described in the 1970s by French and British doctors. In the early part of the 20th century, anorexia was mistakenly viewed as an endocrine disease and was treated with three extracts. The term anorexia nervosa implies a nervous loss of appetite, but this is a misnomer because the loss of appetite rarely occurs until the advanced stages of the illness. The German term for the disorder, which translates as mania for leanness, is a more accurate characterization of anorexia. An intense fear of gaining weight and becoming obese is common among anorexia patients. The symptoms of anorexia include extreme weight loss through restricting calorie intake, purging using laxatives and diuretics, or by exercising excessively to burn off the calories. Anorexia nervosa appears to be far more widespread in industrialized societies, in which there is an abundance of food and where being attractive is associated with being thin. More than 90% of anorexia cases acquire comorbidities. In 85% of patients, the onset of the disorder occurs between the ages of 13 and 20, when young people are particularly sensitive to images of self-image and symptoms.
