It can be for a variety of reasons. First of all, I think in many cases, students become popular because of their appearance and looks. This is a term called pretty privilege. If you're pretty and beautiful, everyone will assume that you're a very nice person and want to be friends with you. Second, I think if you have good grades, like being at the top of your class, people would want to be friends with you. I think these are major factors in why some students become popular in their school.
