Overall, the populations of all five cities increased over the period, with 2010 recording the highest figures for each city. Bombay experienced the most dramatic population growth, whereas New York showed the smallest increase.
Tokyo remained the most populous city throughout the period, with its population reaching about 27 million in 2010. In contrast, Jakarta was consistently the least populated city among the five. Furthermore, Bombay recorded the most significant growth, with its population increasing by more than 20 million between 1970 and 2010.
By comparison, New York experienced only a modest rise of around 2 million over the same period. Meanwhile, Shanghai and New York followed similar growth patterns between 1970 and 1990. by 2010, Shanghai’s population had increased more rapidly, reaching just over 22 million, while New York’s population remained relatively stable.
