The table compares the number of students and tourists (in thousands) who visited six different countries in 1975 and 1995.
Overall, tourists consistently outnumbered students in all countries during both years. While the number of tourists remained largely stable, student figures showed considerable growth, particularly in the USA, Singapore, and Indonesia.
In 1975, China was the leading destination for both groups, receiving 825,000 tourists and 650,000 students. Taiwan and the UK also attracted high numbers of tourists, with 700,000 and 650,000 respectively. Meanwhile, student figures ranged more widely: Taiwan hosted 540,000, followed by the UK (300,000) and the USA (250,000), whereas Indonesia had the fewest student visitors, at just 20,000.
By 1995, tourist numbers remained unchanged in most destinations, except for a minor increase in Singapore (from 415,000 to 445,000) and a slight decline in Indonesia (from 225,000 to 195,000). In contrast, student numbers rose notably. Taiwan recorded the highest figure, reaching 790,000, while the USA and Singapore saw their student visitors more than double. Indonesia also experienced a fivefold increase, rising from 20,000 to 105,000.
