The table depicts the number of Students and Tourists (in thousands) travelling to six different countries during a twenty-year period from 1975 until present.
It is noticeable that China has relatively absorbed most visitors from both categories during the period. Only in Indonesia can we see that fewest visitors have visited during the same timeline.
In 1975, we can see that China, Taiwan, and the UK had the highest figures, with China accounting for 825 – the maximum recorded – the figures for the other two countries were at 700 (Taiwan) and 650 (the UK). Meanwhile, Singapore, the USA, and Indonesia all contributed to below 500, standing between 225 and 415, to be precise. Similarly, in Students, China and Taiwan were also the countries with the highest figure, with 650 and 540 visitors, followed by the other countries, with a smaller number at 300 and 125. Again, the smallest number here was for Indonesia (20).
Today, the number of Tourists has been relatively stable except in Singapore, rising slightly from 415 to 445, and Indonesia, declining to 195. Students, however, have experienced a rise except in China and in the UK, overtaking Tourists in not only Taiwan but also the USA and inclining closely to Tourists’ level in Singapore. In Indonesia, the number of Students has inclined to 105.
To sum up, despite the fact that Students have witnessed an overall growth, Tourists have remained relatively dominant in almost all countries.
