This charts illustrate how much time female and male residents allocated for free-time activities and household duties per day in the UK in 2008.
Overall, it is apparent that both women and men allocated the most time to TV, radio and video during their off hours, whereas reading and sport required significantly less time. Furthermore, women exhibited higher involvement in household chores, except for repair, which is focused more on by men.
TV, radio and video were by far the most popular leisure activities among both men and women, with former group dedicating more time ( 137 minutes) to this pursuit than the latter one (118 minutes). Both genders allocated approximately 18-19 minutes per day reading, which is slightly more than the time allocated to sport – 15 minutes for men and 11 minutes for women.
When it comes to household activities, females dedicated one half an hour to clothes washing and ironing, compared to men spent just 10 minutes on this pursuit. Moreover, cooking and washing is the most time-consuming activity for both men and women, which required almost 70 minutes for the former group and just over 25 minutes for the latter one. Females once again allocated more time to shopping with about 35 minutes per day, while males spent 22 minutes for this one. Repairing is primarily handled by men, who spent nearly 20 minutes per day, compared to women who devoted only 10 minutes.
