Overall, going on foot has shown the largest increase throughout the given period and became the most popular activity for elderly people. Surfing the Internet also shows a significant rise together with the amount of time spent on reading, surpassing the Theatre.
Hiking started the period with 20% and witnessed a steady annual rise to reach its peak at 80% of the time in the 2010s. By contrast, watching television accounted for 60 percent of free time in the 1980s and hovered at around the same level (65%) until 2010.
Spending time on the Internet has shown a gradual rise from 5% in 1980s to around 15% in 2000 before witnessing a dramatic increase up to 50% of the spare time at the end of the given period. Reading has also demonstrated a climb from 30% in 1980s to 60% in 2010s. Both of these activities started to take up a larger proportion of free time at the end of the period than going to theater, which has experienced a decline from 50% in the 1980s to approximately 45% in the 2010s.
