The bar chart illustrates the proportion of the people living in the cities all over the world and in five continents in 2003 and its future prediction for 2030. Overall, the data shows that the population will have increased in all categories and the largest urban population is expected to live in South America switching from North America.
As can be seen from the diagram, in 2003, almost half of the global population resided in cities. The lowest fraction was observed in Asia and Africa as 45% and almost 40% respectively. The highest rate of city dwellers of 80% was in North America, while Europe and South America shared the second place.
It is anticipated that the percentage for the world urban population will have boosted to over 60% by 2030. Asia and Africa’s urban areas will still be the least populated however there will be a rise in over 50% in each area. The same trend will continue in Europe although the proportion of city residents in South America will be the highest pushing North America’s city population to the second place.
