The line gaph illustrates the percentage of American adults who used five different social media apps, namely Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Twitter from 2012 to 2016.
Overall, Facebook was by the most widely used app throughout the period. Although the other four platforms had lower figures, all of them increased over the period, with Instagram being the second most used app by 2016.
In 2012, Facebook was used by 67% of adults, compared with only 20% for LinkedIn. Facebook’s usage then rose to around 71% in 2013 and remained stable until 2015. However, it increased significantly in the final year to 79%.
To conclude, Instagram and Pinterest also experienced stable growth, rising from 15% and 14% in 2012 to about 32% and 31% in 2016. LinkedIn also rose overall, despite some dips, finished at 29%. Lastly, Twitter presented an upward trend but remained the least used app at the end of the period, at 24%.
