The line graph provides the data on the percentage of unemployed residents of Ireland and the number of emigrants for the period 1988 to 2008.
Overall, although the government successfully combated the unemployment issue, the flow of individuals leaving increased at a high rate. Notably, both categories peaked in the initial year, 1988.
In 1988, Ireland’s unemployment rate stood at 17%, the highest point in the chart over the 20-year period. After the dip that followed between 1988 and 1992, this figure noticeably declined to nearly 6% in 2000. By 2008, it steadily rose to 6%.
Conversely, the number of people emigrating from Ireland began with its peak, which was just over 60,000. From 1988 to 1996, this figure sharply dropped to under 30,000; in particular, the decrease was significant between 1990 and 1992. While it remained relatively stable for the next 8 years, it experienced a rapid increase at the end, reaching 50,000.
