The diagram illustrates the design and operation of a mordern landfill used for household waste. They are 3 procedures: Construction , Use and closure. Overall, a modern landfill is carefully engineered to prevent environmental cootamination. Its is first constructed with 3 layers of protection and a drainage system, and then used for household waste and finally sealed with a clay cover with a pipe to let the gas out of the site.
During the construction stage, A large man made hole is created in an area of natural rock. For the first layer the sides and base of the pit is lined with a thick layer of clay followed by a syntheic lining of clay to prevent the waste liquids from seeping into the soil and lastly a series of drainage of is fixed to dispose the waste liquids to a drainage tank .
In the use phase, the waste is collected from respected houses and then transported to the landfill site by trucks. As waste is accumulated waste liquid is produced in vast quantity which then passes through drainage pipes and is directed towards the drainage tank for safe disposal this processes reduces the risk of soil pollution.Lastly,once the landfill reaches its capacity it is then closed off with a clay cover sealing the landfill site. Meanwhile a pipe is then inserted to allow the gasses generated by decomposition of waste to escape from the site.
