The picture displays the structure and working process of a modern landfill used for household waste.
In general, the landfill is constructed in a man-made hole in a natural rock and after that there are three main stages: construction, usage of the waste disposal and last one is closure. It is designed to manage both solid and liquid waste safety and to prevent environmental contamination.
Turning to the details, the first stage is natural rock which has got man-made hole and then the hole is lined with a layer of clay and a synthetic material to prevent leakage. At the bottom, a drainable tank and several drainable pipes are install to collect waste liquid. Next stage was usage phase, household waste is poured into the landfill by big trucks.
Then the landfill is full, the clay cover put top of the landfill which was a cover for a landfill hole. Additionally, a pipe was active to allow gases produced by decomposing waste to escape safely. This process helps reduce pressure and maintain environment’s safety
