It is also clear that most volunteers came from environmental and educational organizations in both years, but the biggest change was seen in the proportion of people who belong to the sports field. Notably, the healthcare industry had the lowest percentage of volunteers.
Looking at the details of the categories that increased, the proportion of volunteers from the sport sector experienced the biggest growth from the initial 15% to 25% over the given six years. Roughly a fifth of volunteers came from environmental organizations in 2008, and this figure became the biggest contributor by 2014, reaching 29%. There was an overall 1-percentage-point increase in the percent of health care volunteers during the period, and it was the smallest share in both years.
When it comes to decreases, in 2008, the proportion of volunteers in the education field was the largest, at 24%, but this figure had dropped by 7% by 2014. There was a fall in the percentage of people who came from art and the category labeled as ‘other’ by the same 6% (to 12% and 9%, respectively).
