The tables provide information about Fairtrade-labeled coffee and banana sales in five European countries in 1999 and 2004, with figures given in millions of euros.
Overall, there was a general upward trend in sales of both products, although the extent of growth varied considerably between countries. The most striking changes were observed in the UK for coffee and Switzerland for bananas, whereas Denmark and Sweden had the smallest rises or even falls in certain cases.
In 1999, Switzerland generated the highest sales for both coffee and bananas, at 3 and 15 million euros respectively. By 2004, however, coffee sales in the UK had soared to 20 million euros, significantly overtaking Switzerland’s 6 million euros, while Switzerland remained the clear leader in banana sales, reaching 47 million euros.
In contrast, Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden experienced minor changes. For instance, coffee sales in Denmark rose only slightly from 1.8 to 2 million euros, while banana sales declined from 2 to 0.9 million euros. Sweden’s figures for both products remained relatively stable, with banana sales even dropping over the period. Belgium saw modest increases in sales, but these remained low compared to the UK and Switzerland.
