The tables compare the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in five European countries in 1999 and 2004.
For coffee, the UK experienced the most significant growth, soaring from 1.5 million euros in 1999 to 20 million in 2004, making it the highest-selling country by 2004. Switzerland, which had the highest sales in 1999 (3 million), saw a more modest increase to 6 million. Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden showed minimal growth, with sales remaining below 2 million euros in 2004.
In contrast, banana sales were dominated by Switzerland, which more than tripled from 15 million to 47 million euros. The UK and Belgium also saw substantial rises, reaching 5.5 million and 4 million, respectively. However, Sweden and Denmark experienced declines, with Sweden dropping slightly from 1.8 million to 1 million and Denmark falling from 2 million to 0.9 million.
Overall, Switzerland led in banana sales, while the UK became the top market for Fairtrade coffee. Growth trends varied, with some countries showing dramatic increases and others stagnating or declining.
