The tables illustrate the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in five European countries in 1999 and 2004.
In 1999, Switzerland led in sales for both Fairtrade coffee and bananas among the listed countries. While banana sales declined in Sweden and Denmark in 2004, coffee sales saw growth in all five nations.
In 1999, Switzerland recorded Fairtrade coffee sales of 3 million euros, nearly double that of the UK. By 2004, however, the UK had significantly increased its coffee sales to 20 million euros, becoming the largest consumer, followed by Switzerland, which had doubled its sales. Denmark ranked third with 2 million euros, while Belgium and Sweden followed behind.
Switzerland also remained the leading buyer of Fairtrade bananas in both years, with expenditures rising from 15 million euros in 1999 to 47 million euros in 2004. By 2004, the UK had increased its banana purchases five and a half times, and Belgium spent 1.4 million euros more than in 1999. Sweden and Denmark, however, were the only countries to reduce their banana purchases, each by approximately 1 million euros.
