In 1996, Drama was the most popular genre, accounting for approximately 35% of total films released, followed by Comedy at around 30%, and Fantasy at roughly 10%. Romance trailed behind, making up only 5% of the total films released. Conversely, in terms of ticket sales, Drama led the way with around 20% of total sales, followed by Comedy at approximately 15%, and Fantasy at around 5%. Romance contributed a meagre 2% to the total ticket sales.
By 2006, the distribution of films released had shifted, with Comedy overtaking Drama as the most popular genre, with approximately 25% of total films released, followed by Drama at roughly 25%, and Fantasy at nearly 20%. Romance maintained a steady 5% share. In terms of ticket sales, Comedy again led the way with around 10% of total sales, followed by Drama at approximately 10%, and Fantasy at around 2%. Romance’s popularity continued to dwindle, falling to nearly 1% of total ticket sales.
