However, the line graph shows that a stay at a resort was more popular than backpacking throughout the period.

In 1995 the three countries showed different trends. The UK’s figure increased, the US’s figure fell by about 5,000,000 , and Japan experienced a significant rise, with the number reaching 12,000,000 , the second-highest figure after the UK and the US. Unfortunately, Japan’s figure declined by 2005.

The number of resort visitors rose sharply between 1995 and 2000. By contrast, the proportion of backpackers rose steadily. In 1995 the lowest number of people preferred backpacking – about 4,000,000 . However, backpacking showed consistent growth and reached 11,000,000 visitors by 2005.
