Overall, the quantity of overseas students from Japan, Russia, and the USA all witnessed an increasing trend, while the figure of students studying abroad in China had a decreasing trend. In addition, the total number of students from Russia was always at least.
Regarding the number of international students from China and the USA at European universities, China reached the highest number with around 28,000 students, and this figure declined significantly but continuously ranked first at about 22,000 students in the next years. However, China saw a downward trend in the three years later, recording only around 18,000, 18,000, and 16,000 students in 2006, 2007, and 2008, respectively. With reference to students from the United States, it showed an impressive growth. More specifically, in 2004 students from the USA accounted for around 13,000 and grew remarkably in 2005. This data went up gradually throughout the period until it reached the highest number in 2008 with more than 27,000 students.
In terms of the quantity of students coming from the two countries examined, both Japan and Russia showed that the number of students studying at European Universities is pretty low. The total number of Japanese students fluctuated around 7,000 between 2004 and 2006. However, it climbed slightly in the next year and reached 10,000 in 2008. On the other hand, Russia always had the least. Russia’s number of students decreased minimally in 2005 to around 2,500 students enrolled but also increased slightly in the next 3 years with 4,000 students enrolled.
