The chart illustrates how many international participants enrolled in tertiary education in a specific European country.
As can be inferred from the graph, while the USA and Japan exhibited significant growth the opposite was true for China and Russia. Additionally, it is also apparent that Russia registered the lowest figure out of the groups examined.
First, the figure for China and the USA commenced at about 26,000 and 13,000 respectively which was the first and second place in 2004. From 2005 to 2006, while the USA witnessed a significant increase to approximately 17,000, China decreased dramatically to the same level. Despite China greatly surpassing the USA in 2005, both countries were at the same point in 2006. In the last two years, the USA had overtaken the first place at 22,000 and 26,000 in 2007 and 2008 respectively, however, China still experienced a rapid drop to 16,000 in 2008 which stood at the second place.
Turning to Japan and Russia, Japanese applicants doubled the Russian one in the first two years, with the figures of 7,000 compared to 3000 in the first year and 7,000 compared to 4,000 in the second year. Next, both Japan and Russia experienced the same upward trends in 2006 at nearly 8,000 and 5,000 respectively. In 2007 and 2008, while Japan rapidly grew to 10,000 in 2008, Russia had a slight fluctuation, remaining at 3,000 at the same year
