Overall, the application of students from the USA showed an upward trend, while the number of Chinese students declined over the 4 years. In addition, the number of Russian and Japanese students remained roughly stable.
To begin with, the number of students from the USA increased suddenly, beginning with less than 15,000 applicants and ending with more than 25,000 people, reaching the same number of students as China had in 2004. In contrast, the smallest number of students from Russia remained the same between 2004 and 2008, having only less than 5,000 people.
With regards to the asian applicants, Chinese students reached their maximum, accounting for approximately 27,000 individuals before declining sharply by almost 15,000 people. Meanwhile, the number of Japanese applicants remained unchanged before it experienced a slight growth, which accounted for 10,000 people. Even though it did not overtake the number of Chinese students in applications.
