The pie charts compare the proportions of passengers travelling for different purposes at four UK airports: Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and Stansted. Overall, leisure-related travel dominates at all airports, with holidays and visiting friends or relatives accounting for the majority of journeys. Business travel is particularly significant at Heathrow, while Gatwick has the highest proportion of holidaymakers. In contrast, “other” reasons represent only a very small fraction in every case.
At Gatwick, over half of passengers (54%) travel for holidays, making it the most common purpose there. Visiting friends or family is the second-largest category at 30%, whereas business trips account for just 14%, and only 2% fall into the “other” category. Heathrow shows a more balanced distribution: holidays and visiting friends or relatives each comprise 35% of travel, while business travel is comparatively high at 26%, the largest figure among the four airports. The remaining 4% travel for other purposes.
By comparison, Luton and Stansted display similar patterns, with visiting friends or relatives forming the largest share, at 50% and 48% respectively. In both airports, 36% of passengers travel for holidays. Business travel is less prominent, representing 18% at Luton and 14% at Stansted, while other reasons account for just 2% at each airport.
