Overall, Japan accounted for the highest proportion of Australian exports in 1990. The second largest share of exports was recorded in the US. Meanwhie, China and India accounted for the lowest figures of exports from Australia.
In 1990, Japan had the highest exports rate at about 27%, folowed by the US at around 11%. By contrast, the percentage of Australian exports to China accounted for 3%, while exports to India made up just 1%. Between 1990 and 2005, the proportion of Australian exports to Japan showed significant decrease at 17%. The US export rate decline slightly to approximately 7%, whereas China’s figure rose sharply to 11%. In addition, the percentage of exports to India increased from 1% to 5%.
From 2005 onwards, China’s rate increased sharply, picking at 28%, and became the leading destination for exports from Australia, while Japan’s figure considarably fell to 16%. By contrast, the proportion of Australian exports to US was nearly identical to the figure in 2005, which was 7%. India accounted for the least proportion of Australian exports, at just 5% in 2012.
