Overall, exports to China increased significantly over the period, whereas the proportions for Japan and the US declined. Meanwhile, India experienced a slight upward trend.
In 1990, Japan was Australia’s largest export market at approximately 26%. However, this figure gradually fell to around 16% by 2012. Similarly, exports to the US decreased overall, dropping from about 11% in 1990 to roughly 6% at the end of the period, despite a slight fluctuation around 2000.
By contrast, China saw a dramatic rise in its share of Australian exports. Starting at just 3% in 1990, the figure increased steadily and surged after 2005, reaching approximately 28% in 2012, making it the largest export destination. Exports to India also grew moderately, rising from about 2% to around 6% over the period.
