Overall, the percentage of Australian exports to China and India had increased, while the reverse had been true for the figure for Japan and the United States.
In 1996, around 1% and about 2% were the rate of people in Australia who ship overseas to India and China, respectively. Subsequently, the figure for India remained unchanged, before increasing gradually to approximately 7%, eventually decreasing slightly to 5% at the end of the period. Furthermore, there was a steady ascent to 5% in 1998, after which surging to about 28% in 2001 and surpassing the figure for the US and Japan in the last two years.
Regarding Japan and the US, after fluctuating between around 10% and 8% in the first two years of this period, the percentage of citizens in Australia who sell to the United States declined dramatically to 5% in 2000 and grew slightly to approximately to 7% towards the end of the period. Moreover, the figure for Japan was about 26% in the initial period, before decreasing steadily to 20% in 1997. Then, the proportion of Australian export to Japan had mostly remained unchanged, eventually reaching at roughly 17% in 2001
