The line graph illustrates the proportion of the older population from 65 years between 1940 and 2040 in the USA, Sweden and Japan.

Overall, the share of population in the USA and Sweden increased gradually over the period given, while for Japan, it fluctuated and is expected to grow sharply in 2030. At the start of the period older people were most in the USA, which was replaced by Sweden in 1990, and following that Japan is predicted to be the most popular place for older population in the final years.

In 1940 the proportion of the population aged 65 years and over was around 9 per cent in the USA, before a gradual rise in 1980 and slight decrease in 2020. Likewise, in Sweden the proportion of the older population was about 7 after which the figure increased moderately and is expected to be 25 per cent in 2040.

On the other hand, Japan was the most young country with the proportion of older population at 5 in the beginning. This figure, which climbed only 3 per cent 80 years later, is expected to increase and reach the peak at approximately 27 per cent in 2040.
