The bar chart illustrates the changes in the percentage of the population aged 65 and over in three countries – Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom – over a 50-year period, including a projection for 2030.
Overall, Germany had the highest proportion of elderly people throughout the period. Meanwhile, Canada and the UK showed similar figures, although both were lower than Germany.
In Germany, the proportion of people aged 65 and over stood at 15% in 1980 before rising to 20% in 2000. It is predicted to increase further to around 25% by 2030, which will be the highest figure among the three countries.
In contrast, Canada started with 10% in 1980, while the UK recorded a slightly higher figure of around 13%. By 2000, both countries reached a similar level of approximately 15%. Looking ahead, the percentage in Canada is expected to rise to about 22%, whereas the UK will grow more moderately to just under 20% by 2030.
