The bar chart below illustrates the amount of salt consumed by men and women across different age groups in a European country in 2019.
Overall, there is an upward trend in salt consumption among middle-aged individuals (20-29, 30-39, 40-49) of both genders. Salt intake for men increased significantly with age, particularly during middle age.
At the youngest ages, both men and women consumed just over 1000 milligrams per day, which is below the recommended 2300 mg. However, salt consumption among men continued to increase notably, exceeding the daily limit at the age of 30-39 with 5000 mg. This intake level remained high from ages 40-49 to 60-69 at around 4000 mg per day before dropping to approximately 3800 mg per day.
As for women, salt consumption exceeded 2300 mg from ages 6-10, peaking at just under 4000 mg between the ages of 30-39. This level was the highest before decreasing back to 2300 mg per day at the age of 70+, aligning with the recommended salt intake.
