The diagram illustrates the differences in salt intake of European males or females among different age groups during 2019.
Overall, men in a European country generally consumes more salt than women almost their entire lifetime. From infancy towards pre-adolescence, boys and girls’ salt consumption aren’t far from each other. However, their teenage years, the discrepancy between male and female salt intake mainly becomes bigger and bigger as they age.
In addition, the recommended daily salt intake is only 2300 mg, but at the age of six onwards, both males and females exceeds the allowable mark. They both reach the highest consumption between the ages 30-39 years old, ingesting almost twice the daily recommended intake for women, and more than two times for men. Despite this alarming rate, a gradual decrease of mg intake can be seen for both male and female starting at the age of 40, and women’s salt intake becomes normal when they are 70+ years old.
