Overall, seafood imports have grown a lot since 2002, reaching a level almost four times the original value. However, this amount is going to decrease, according to forecasts. About half of the seafood imported in 2022 came from China and Thailand, which are the two largest importers, followed by Canada.
The growth of imports has been exponential: in 2002, not much more than 5 billion US dollars were imported, and in 2012 about 10, while in 2022 this number rose to 20 billion. Despite that, in the future, the US is going to spend less to import seafood (less than 20 billion in 2032, according to the forecast).
Regarding the origin of this food, China and Thailand accounted for 28% and 23%, respectively. They share the podium with Canada, from where 16% of seafood arrives. To satisfy their needs, the US buys fish also from Indonesia, Vietnam and Ecuador, although none of these countries reach 10% of imports.
