The bar chart compares the average number of hours per day that men and women spent on six different activities in 2011.
Overall, work and sleep accounted for the largest proportions of time for both genders. Men generally spent more time on work, household chores and other activities, whereas women devoted more time to sleeping, childcare and shopping.
Regarding the activities on which men spent more time, work accounted for the largest proportion of their day, at approximately 8.5 hours, compared with 8 hours for women. Men also devoted slightly more time to household chores, spending just over 2 hours, whereas the figure for women was around 2 hours. The greatest difference was observed in other activities, with men allocating about 4.5 hours, almost 2 hours more than women, who spent roughly 2.5 hours.
By contrast, women spent more time on the remaining activities. They slept for approximately 6.5 hours per day, around half an hour longer than men. Likewise, women devoted about 2.5 hours to childcare, compared with only 1 hour for men, representing the largest gender gap in the chart. In addition, women spent roughly 1 hour shopping, which was twice as much as the 0.5 hours recorded for men.
