The bar chart illustrates the percentages of male and female academic staff in seven university subjects in 2008.
Overall, it is clear that men dominated in science-related fields, particularly engineering, whereas women were more prevalent in arts and history. The most significant gender gap is seen in engineering.
According to the chart, males accounted for about 80% of staff in engineering, which was by far the highest figure, while females represented only around 10%. Similarly, men outnumbered women in science (approximately 60% vs 25%) and astronomy, where males made up about 55% of the workforce compared to roughly 30% for females.
In contrast, women were more dominant in history, with around 50% compared to about 25% for males. A similar pattern appeared in arts, where females accounted for approximately 45%, exceeding the male figure of around 35%. In law and medicine, the gap was smaller: men slightly outnumbered women in law (50% vs 35%), while in medicine the proportions were nearly similar, at around 40% for women and 35% for men.
