Overall, the number of men participants increase gradually over the years while female participants experienced a sharp increase in 1984 and 2012.
In 1924, the male candidates in 1924 was around 3000 candidates whereas female candidates only take up a fraction of the roster with only around 200 candidates. 28 years later in the 1952 Olympics event, both men and women competitors experienced a noteworthy increase in figure with men participants increased by 2000 and women participants increased roughly 4 times their number in 1924. Men candidates continue to rise gradually over the course of 60 years in contrast to female candidates which increase significantly from about 700 candidates to around 2000 candidates. Female participant then dramatically increased by tripling their figure in 2012.
The number of competitors was about 3600 in 1924, after which it proceeds to increase gradually to 5500 candidates in 1952 and around 6000 candidate in 1984. After that, it experienced a considerable rise to about more than 10000 participants in 2012 mainly due to the sharp increase in female competitors.
