The bar chart and line graph illustrate proportion of male and female athletes who participated in the Olympic games between 1924 and 2012, as well as the overall number of participants.
Overall, total number of athletes increased dramatically due to rapid growth among women. Although, men’s dominance was clear in most years, the gender gap narrowed significantly in 2012.
In 1924, 3000 attendees were males, whereas, females accounted for one-thirtieth of that number(100). In the following Olympic games, held in 1952, nearly 1500 new sportsmen welcomed, while, roughly 500 more female athletes participated that year. This upward trend continued in 1984, when men reached just above 5000, meanwhile, women numbered 1600. The most dramatic change occurred in 2012. Male participants peaked at around 6000, whereas, the number of female athletes rocketed to just below 5000, almost matching the male figure. As a result, total number of attendees soared, from just over 3000 to nearly 11000, in 1924 and 2012, respectively.
