The provided bar chart demonstrates the proportions of how many people living in each household in the UK in a 20-year period, starting from 1981.
Overall, both percentages of households having 2 residents in 1981 and 2001 are the highest. Meanwhile, there had been a significant decrease in living above 3 people under one roof in 2001 compared to in 1981.
In 1981, the total rate of households that had 3, 4, 5, and 6 citizens accounted for more than a half, which were 20%, 18%, 8%, and 6%, respectively. However, in 2001, a falling tendency happened to these four figures. The percentages of 3-person households, 4-person households, and 5-person households decreased similarly by around 2% to 3%, whereas, the proportion of households inhabited by 6 people dropped 3 times in 2001 compared to the year 1981, which remained the lowest in both given years.
In contrast, there was a slight growth in the figure for 2-person households, which was from 31% to merely more than a third. The greatest shift belonged to the percentage of residences containing one citizen which was by 9%, from 17% in 1981 to more than a quarter in 2001.
