The bar charts illustrate the number of individual in a family in the UK in 1981 and 2001.
Earlier, most families had two members, while some had three times more. Over decades, households of two saw a slight increase, but families with more than four members declined.
In 1981, a substantial number of homes had 2 people residing in them, totaling 31. This was followed by families of 3 members, which comprised 20. Additionally, there were noticeable instances of households with 4 members and single-person homes at 17 and 18, respectively. Conversely, fewer households included more than 4 members, with about 8 families having 5 people and only 6 having 6 people.
Conversely, after two decades by 2001, there was a significant rise in single-person households, which increased from 17 to 26. Furthermore, a slight uptick was noted in two-member households. In contrast, homes with more than two individuals experienced a reduction over the years. Additionally, in 2001, there were 15 homes with four people, six households with five, and only a few families with six members.
