The bar chart shows the percentage of families by size over the 20 year period in the UK, from 1981 to 2001.
Overall, while the two members in one household was the largest percent, six family members were the lowest in both years. In contrast, the percentage of 1-person and 2-person households increased, and the percentage of all other sized households decreased.
Statistics in 1981 revealed that 31% for the household consisting of 2 members was the highest number. 1-person and 4-person households made up similar percentages, at 17% and 18% respectively, whereas 5-person and 6-person households only made up 8% and 6% of the total.
By 2001, the proportion of 1-person and 2-person households had risen to 26% and 34%, in the same order. Meanwhile, the percentage of 3 and 4 individuals per family decreased by 3% and 2%, respectively. In addition, there was only a slight difference between 5-member households in 1981 and 2001, dropping from 8% to 6%. Whereas the percent of 6-people families declined to 2% from 6% by the end of the period.
