The chart illustrates the data about car owning families in the UK from 1951 to 2007.
Overall, over 56 years, there was an upward trend among households in owning at least one car. By the second half of the period, the number of families possessing several cars considerably increased, however the share was relatively lower compared to the single car owners.
Initially, only 12% of the households possessed one car, while the rest 88% did not have one. After sharp increase, in 1967, single car ownership peaked at 43% and this trend continued at a relatively same level until 2007. Meanwhile, the share of families with no car continued to fall and plunged at 22% in 2007.
The ownership of two cars accounted for 2% in 1951, which was substantially rare among households. However, it gradually rose and reached 29% by the end of the period. For the initial 16 years, it was not possibly to have three or more cars in one household, but the number of owners steadily grew from 1970s and reached its peak at 9% in 2007.
